The God of the Impossible

The God of the Impossible

An Impossible Situation

About four hundred years before Moses birth, through God’s providence Jacob’s son Joseph arrives in Egypt under less than promising circumstances. After a series of unfortunate events Joseph is appointed second in command to Pharoah just in time to save the rest of his family from a severe famine in their land.

Approximately 70 Jewish people went into Egypt.  Four hundred years later there are well over a million Jews living in Egypt raising alarms with the new king who did not know Joseph or all that he had done for the nation. It is under this cloud of fear that the new king issues a command to all Egyptian citizens that all male babies are to be thrown into the Nile river to drown as an effort to stem the population growth among the Jews.

How is it that Moses survived when most of the other Jewish male babies of that time were killed by Pharoah?

“Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him”  – Exodus 2:1-4

I believe the answer is because of his parent’s faith.  Imagine what it must have felt like for Jochebed being nine months pregnant in a land where your neighbors are waiting for you to deliver your child to see if it’s a boy, then take your newborn son and drown him.

It is in this environment that we see faith exercised by Jochebed and her husband. After their son was born they believed that God had more in store for him than a watery grave. Armed with this faith, Jochebed came up with a plan to put Moses in a waterproof basket in the Nile River under the careful gaze of his sister Miriam who was looking to see what happened to him.

As only God can do, the daughter of Pharoah “happened” to come to the river to bathe at the very same time Moses was floating most likely cooing all the way. Moses life is spared when the daughter of Pharoah takes him in and raises him in the palace with Moses mother serving as his nurse and being paid for the job.  The story of Jochebed demonstrates the power of Faith in God to change circumstances and outcomes based on our faith in Him.

Another Impossible Situation

This morning when I woke up the words “According to Your Faith” were in my heart.  These words are found in the Matthew 9:29, in the story of Jesus healing two blind men in verses 27 – 32. When the men come to Jesus, he asks them “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”  They respond “Yes, Lord!”  Jesus then touches their eyes and says those powerful, life-altering words “According to your faith be it unto you” and their blindness was healed.

What will you believe God for today?
